[Review] Ad Management Mod
« on: June 24, 2020, 11:19:29 PM »
Mod Author: SMFHacks.com Team [nofollow]
Link: https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=255 [nofollow]
Version: 3.5d
SMF Version: 2.0.17

Mod Text
The description of this mod is quite large, almost a half is change log information, that being said, this is expected as the mod is one of the oldest on the mod site at 14 years old.  The grammar on the text heavy bit is simple however as mentioned it is quite lengthy and confusing.  Specially if the user is not a native English speaker.  The mod author does do a good attempt at breaking each area down with other sections being simpler to understand.  The use of color in the headers does help break the text up and is more pleasing on the eye than flat text.  A suggestion for the author is move the change log to a external link and also look at the language used in the "Adding Ads" section to see if this can be summarised in an easier manner to make the text more pleasing and help sell the mod more.  Except for the small things it is a good description with alot of useful information and links.

Code
The code of the mod is quite significant and does show its age, while the mod does tie into designs well the design aspect of the code is where it really hits.  While many of the php changes are at the quality you would expect from smfhacks, the files are well documented so its easy to see where it makes changes, the actual template files uses tables and inline css, while their is nothing technically wrong with this, it would impact anyone who is looking for a responsive site.   However the mod does cater for multiple SMF versions so going forward it would be nice to see this being updated for modern browsing.

Theme
The Ad Management Mod does make some changes in the core theme files to get the key placement.  While the changed may not work on all themes, the installation on default theme caused no issues.  The look flows well into the design and does have ability for some customisation on how it implements into the site design.  The downside is the feedback section when uninstalling it gives a feeling of someone who gave up when designing it.  Also the large ads in the admin panel section.  While we know this is to help the author the banner is rather large compared to rest of the area.  With this being said it is not something you will see a lot, and it is not on the section to add the ads.  Also the end user will not see this so its truly minor.  A suggestion for the author to consider is moving some of the internal ads for the pro version to a new page where they can better sell why the pro version is worth the investment.

Overview

Overall this is a really good mod, it has survived the test of time and does boast over 247k downloads so smfhacks has hit a niche that is needed, specially as it has outrun many of the other Ad mods, with the other dedicated Ad mod not being updated in almost 10 years.   Besides for the template code, the mod is simple to use, ties into the theme you are using and even the free version has suitable options for your forum.

Pros: Its a really cool mod I like the features that allow the posting ads in different places, used it when I owned a forum back in 1.1.07.

Cons: I don't like the limitations that are on it, the free version should have ability to do more!

Summary: Great mod but limited
